Thanks to Social Nature, I tried the Ocean's Halo Ramen broth (they sent a FREE product coupon in exchange for a review on their site). I can't recommend Social Nature enough! Anyway, I wanted to expand on my thoughts on Ocean's Halo Ramen broth here as well.
I heated a cup up in a saucepan after cooking and cooling an egg. Meanwhile, I sauteed some mushrooms, baby corn, and bamboo shoots. Briefly wilted some baby spinach. Then tried a bit of the broth by itself before assembling the bowl. I was surprised at how bland it was, given the amount of sodium! And there's a slight chalky undertaste. After adding the broth to the noodles, and topping it with the veggies and egg, it was a little better. But I ended up having to add a dash of reduced-sodium soy sauce just to give it a bit of depth. Maybe it would be better with some Sriracha added.
I AM very glad to see a traditional Ramen broth that's Veg*n, though. Instead of pork, they use a "Vegan pork flavor".
Nutritionally, it's not bad (apart from the sodium). 1 cup has 40 calories, 2g of fat (none saturated or trans fat, and no cholesterol), 3g carbs (1g of which is fibre), and 2g of protein. It has 26% of the daily value for Vitamin D, 6% of Vitamin B6, 3% of Vitamin B12, 10% of Riboflavin, 4% of Thiamine, 1% of Calcium, 4% of Potassium, 4% of Phosphorus, 50% of Iodine, 13% of Molybdenum, and 4% of Magnesium. But the sodium. One cup contains 740mg (32% dv)!
I'd say that if you're curious to try it, look for a sale (these broths aren't cheap!) or a coupon. Or both. Personally, I think I'll stick to my usual broths.
Until next time...
