I chose the block rather than the tub, so I will be giving my thoughts accordingly.
It's quite a bit firmer than dairy cream cheese, and a little harder to spread. But it softens beautifully if you heat it (I put some on a toasted blueberry bagel and put that back into the toaster oven for a minute, heat off. I also spread it on a bagel and briefly microwaved it, which also works).
So, how does it taste? Almost like cream cheese. It's a bit more "buttery" and a tiny bit less tangy than I'm used to. But it's close enough that if you're Vegan, lactose intolerant, or trying to cut back on dairy, you'd enjoy it.
Nutritionally, it's slightly lower in calories and total fat than dairy cream cheese, but much higher in saturated fat. It's slightly higher in sodium and carbs. It's a great source of Vitamin B12 (a common issue with Vegans unless they supplement or eat fortified foods), but not much else. And protein-wise, dairy is better. For a spread, it's definitely a fair choice.
The package says that 2 Tbsp (30g) contains 90 calories, 9 grams of fat (8g are saturated), 2g carbohydrates, NO protein(!), 120 mg (5% dv) of sodium, and 30% dv of Vitamin B12. It's not a significant source of Calcium(!), vitamin D, Iron, or Potassium. The packaging also says it's not a significant source of trans fats, total and added sugars, or cholesterol (but since it's entirely of plant origin, it shouldn't have ANY cholesterol). Of course, "not a significant source" doesn't mean none (for trans fats, it's less than .5g per serving).
According to My Food Data, dairy cream cheese contains 102 calories per 2 T (30g) serving. It also has 10g fat (5.9g of which are saturated), 29.3 mg cholesterol, 1.6g carbs, 1.8g protein, 91.1 mg sodium (4% dv), contains 3% dv Vitamin B12, 2% dv each Calcium and Phosphorus and 1% dv Potassium.
The only real sticking point is the price. Gotta love the "plant tax"! At the store I went to, it was US$5.49 (which I believe is currently $2.50 more than even Philadelphia cream cheese). Still, I'd buy it again if it were on sale and/or I had a coupon.
I hope you enjoyed this post! Until next time....
